One of the most interesting things about sitting down to gather up my thoughts is never knowing what they’ll be. Some days it’s poetry. Other days it’s an essay. Some days words fail. Today what came out was a list. A sort of Christmas list, I guess. So I wrote a letter to Santa. And when I was done it felt good, and I thought maybe the most important part of writing to Santa is not the getting of the gift but just figuring out what I really want. So here goes …

Dear Santa,

It’s Dean. Hi.
These are the things I really want for Christmas this year:

Good health.
Good food.
Good company.

A good room.
A good chair.
A warm fire.
A good book.

I want to do good work.
To make good art.
To enjoy peaceful sleep,
and waking rest.

I want to hear the sound of laughter,
the sound of silence,
And always the sound of Tina’s voice.

I’d like ears that truly hear,
eyes that truly see,
frequent opportunities to love,
and freedom from too much fear.

I want to be valued for exactly who I am,
permission to change who I am,
and permission to fail.

I want communion with Nature,
and an endless supply of wonder.

Most of all, I want enough time.

Enough time to ask all my questions.
Enough time to find at least some of the answers.
Enough time to grow old.
Enough time to grow young.
Enough time to build myself a beautiful life.
