Questions for Revelation 17-18

Summary of last class:

Last week we looked at the song of praise sang by the people of God who stood with the lamb and were told of the demise of their adversaries (Rev. 15:1-8). The song they sang had its roots in the Old Testament as God people had sung in victory before (Exodus 15). In chapter 16 John sees seven bowls of God’s wrath poured out on the Roman Empire (Rev. 16:1-21). The seven bowls are different from the other punishments that have been introduced throughout the book. Before chapter 16 all of the punishments have been partial and designed to get the Romans to repent. The bowls of wrath symbolize utter destruction and complete ruin to the Romans as they refused to repent and persisted in wickedness.

In chapters 17-18 John will continue to describe the downfall of Rome. He has referred to her as a beast, a false prophet, and even as a composite of other animals. In chapters 17-18 Rome is symbolized by a different image. John will describe her as falling and records the response of the world and of heaven at her fall.
