This morning David continues his study of the book of James. Today, he looks at chapter 5.



 



James 5 - Warnings, Encouragement, and Power



  • Warnings to the rich - James 5:1-6
    • Have you known anyone that was much richer than you? Did they consider themselves rich? Have you ever known anyone that was much, much poorer than you?


    • We should all follow the instructions to the rich.





  • What things were some doing wrong in verses 1-6.
    • Kept wages back by fraud - v. 4


    • Self-indulgence - v. 5


    • Condemned and murdered righteous people





  • How can we avoid being spiritually impaired by our desire for money?
    • 1:11, 14, 15, 17, 27; 2:1,2,5,6,14-15; 4:2-4, 15-17


    • Luke 12:20-21 "But God said to him, Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?"


    • Matthew 6:19-21 "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. 





  • Be Patient and Persevering
    • Look for but be patient for the second coming


    • Philippians 4:5, "Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand."


    • Hebrews 10:24-27


    • 1 Peter 4:7 "The end of all things is at hand; therefore, be self-controlled and soberminded for the sake of your prayers."





  • We should not grumble against each other
    • James 4:11-12, 5:9


    • Examples of longsuffering and endurance


    • Job 1:21-22, 2:10, 42:10, Hebrews 11,


    • Matt. 10:22, “and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.” 


    • Matt. 5:10,11, “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” 


    • Heb.12:1-2 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfector of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”

  • Power of Prayer - James 5:13-19
    • What are some of the reasons here why we should pray? v. 13-16


    • What was the purpose of the oil in v.14


    • Mark 6:13, “And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them.”


    • Luke 10:34, “He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine.”


    • How do we best follow this today?





  • When did prayer have an effect in your life?
    • Where does the power of prayer that is talked about in v.16 come from?


    • Prov. 15:29, “The Lord is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayer of the righteous.”


    • What was special about Elijah? v.17 


    • Acts 14:15, “Men why are you doing these things? We also are men, of like nature with you, and we bring you good news, that you should turn from these vain things to a living God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them.”


    • Who is the someone talked about in v. 19?
