The Federal Government will extend its program of wage subsidies for first year apprentices, paying for up to 50 per cent of wages. The first round of funding, announced in October lasty year, saw the creation of 100,000 new apprenticeship positions and this move could see a further 70,000 employed. The move has been welcomed by employers, but critics argue tackling youth unemployment overall will require much more.
