On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about last night's 5-3 loss against the Padres. After there was some controversy about why Jeff Samardzija didn't appear in the opening series against the Dodgers, he finally made his season debut last night and it was easy to see why the Giants held him back. From the very first pitch, Samardzija lacked stuff and command, and eventually the Padres got the best of him. Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a three-run, opposite-field home run early in the game, and it prompted many to wonder whether Oracle Park is playing differently because the Giants have closed off the openings in the right field wall to prevent fans from gathering on the boardwalk in right to catch a glimpse of the game.
Shortly afterward Wil Myers, who has played extremely well at Oracle Park in his Padres career, launched an impressive two-run homer to center field against Samardzija, which gave the Padres a lead they would not relinquish. The Giants got an impressive three-inning relief appearance from Conner Menez, who retired every batter he faced, but the could not capitalize on some late rallies. Former Giant Drew Pomeranz shut the door in the 9th for the Padres.
Ben discusses the fact that the Giants could call up Joey Bart today, but that remains unlikely for a number of reasons. Among them is the fact that Tyler Heineman has been one of the Giants' lone offensive bright spots, so production at the catcher positions has not been one of the Giants' many early season issues. Also, catcher Chadwick Tromp was called up yesterday and the Giants would like to see what they have in the 24-year-old Arubian. He'll likely play mostly in a platoon with Heineman for the time being, but it's worth monitoring the organization's position on the readiness of Bart, who's arguably their best prospect.
