Analyzing the San Francisco Giants' ill-advised decisions to trade young talent for Evan Longoria and Andrew McCutchen after losing 98 games in 2017. What if the front office had acted differently? Longoria's deal with the Giants has been underwater from the beginning, but the silver lining is that the young talent the Giants gave up hasn't amounted to much. In McCutchen's case, however, Bryan Reynolds became the exact type of young, controllable player that the Giants wish they had. Since McCutchen only had one year left on his deal, he was quickly out of the organization and the Giants were left in a much worse situation than they were before those trades.
