The Jets have drafted a quarterback in the first time in nine years. On a superficial level, there are some similarities. In both instances, the Jets traded up into the top five to land a new signal caller. Both Mark Sanchez and Sam Darnold attended USC in college. Those are indeed superficial comparisons, however. These are two different players, and they entered different circumstances.
Those differences are the focus of our podcast today. The Jets of 2018 are very different from the Jets of 2009, and one could make the argument this situation is more conducive to the growth of a young quarterback. Back then, the Jets essentially painted themselves into a corner. The Jets had no viable option aside from starting the young quarterback. This time the Jets have left themselves with a couple of options in case playing Darnold right off the bat is not the best choice.
Expectations are also lower today than they were then. The 2009 Jets were a team filled with veterans who had a new coach and had just missed the Playoffs. The focus of that team was making a deep run, not developing a quarterback. We discuss both of these factors on today's show.
