The Lakers have hit another big obstacle in their quest to, well, look something like the team everyone expected them to be when the season began. Anthony Davis is out at least a month. So while there are a bunch of short term questions the Lakers are facing, there are serious long term ones around Davis, as well. As in, do his problems this season shake the confidence he can be "the man" once LeBron James is ready to retire? Or reaches a point in his career where he's not capable of carrying a team?
It's not that Davis is wrecked, or isn't an elite player. But the list of guys who can unquestionably be the best player on a championship team is short, and the presumption was that Davis is on it. Certainly it seemed he was there after the 2020 title. And that Davis would continue to ascend. Now, though? Not so sure.It's about health, it's about dominance. And the answer to the question has a big impact on the team's future, and how they handle the post-LeBron era.
Plus...Nobody knows quite how long Frank Vogel will be out, thanks to the league's Covid-19 protocols. But for however long it is, people are going to be paying incredibly close attention to the work of David Fizdale, who is on the sidelines while Vogel is sidelined and is presumably the guy who would replace him should Vogel get fired.
