Jesse Spector hosts after the Yankees lost three of four to the Orioles in a weekend series that concluded with Giancarlo Stanton's second platinum sombrero of his career -- and of the opening homestand.
The Yankees are playing about as badly as they can play, yet they're 5-5. Granted, the Blue Jays, Rays, and Orioles are not exactly elite competition, but even playing badly against bad teams, you could often wind up with a 3-7 or 2-8 stretch. So, how good might the Yankees be when they eventually play well? And they will eventually play well.
Stanton has been dreadful, but he can look at some of his teammates, particularly in the bullpen, and see that bad performances aren't forever. Every reliever who had an early hiccup has moved on from it, and now the bullpen looks to be taking shape as the kind of force it was expected to be.
We'll see how much any or all of this changes this week in Boston, where the Yankees head to take on an 8-1 Red Sox team that could put them seven games back in the loss column by the end of the week. Is it too early for that kind of talk? Yes. Yes it is. But it's also true.
