STORY 1: Cobb Police Investigating Homicide at Cumberland Hotel

The Cobb County Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting at a Cumberland hotel. On Tuesday, police taped off the entrance to the Budgetel Inns & Suites — Atlanta Galleria Stadium, located off Circle 75 Parkway just south of its intersection with Windy Hill Road. Cobb police spokesperson Eric Smith confirmed that there was a shooting in the Circle 75 Parkway area which was being investigated as a homicide. No other details were provided by press time.

STORY 2: Rosalynn Carter memorial service draws all five living first ladies

A memorial service was held at Emory University for former first lady Rosalynn Carter, who passed away on Nov. 19 at the age of 96. President Joe Biden, former President Bill Clinton, First Lady Jill Biden, former First Lady Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, Michelle Obama, and Melania Trump attended the service. Despite being in hospice care since last February, former President Jimmy Carter, 99, attended the service. Friends and family praised Rosalynn Carter's commitment to various causes, including mental health, caregiving, and disease eradication. She was credited with revolutionizing the role of first ladies in American government and politics. Rosalynn Carter will be laid to rest in Plains, Georgia.

STORY 3: Consultant Examining Number of Cobb Contracts for Women, Minorities

Cobb County is investing $342,000 in a disparity study conducted by Atlanta-based law and consulting firm Griffin & Strong. The study aims to examine the contracts awarded by the county to minority-owned, women-owned, and disabled veteran-owned businesses over the past five years in construction, goods, and services. The goal is to identify any disparities and set goals for increased inclusion. The study involves a legal analysis, purchasing policies and procedures review, data collection, market analysis, utilization analysis, availability analysis, disparity analysis, regression analysis, anecdotal evidence collection, and a final report with recommendations. Public participation is encouraged through interviews, surveys, focus groups, and public information sessions. The study is expected to be completed next summer.

STORY 4: Cobb Commission Delays Establishing Opioid Crisis Advisory Board

The Cobb Board of Commissioners has delayed the establishment of the Cobb County Opioid Abatement Advisory Council. The decision was made to allow more time to clarify qualifications for council members. The council is part of the settlement between Georgia and major pharmaceutical distributors for their roles in the opioid crisis. The council will consist of three to seven members, including representatives from the Cobb Board of Health, Cobb County Sheriff's Office, and Highland Rivers Behavioral Health. The other members will be designees from Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services, Cobb County Police Department, Cobb District Attorney’s Office, and Cobb County Superior Court. Commissioners raised questions about the selection process and potential residency requirements for members.

STORY 5: New Georgia House map fits spirit but not letter of court order

Georgia House Republicans released a proposed redistricting map that appears to fall short of creating the five additional Black-majority districts ordered by a federal judge. The proposed map includes three new Black-majority districts in the southern end of metro Atlanta. The map also creates nearly two dozen House districts with white minorities, providing an opportunity for people of color, including Hispanic and Asian voters, to elect candidates of their choice. The proposed map modifies the boundaries of 56 of the 180 House districts, stretching from Cobb and Gwinnett counties south through the metro region to Houston and Peach counties south of Macon.
