Montreal Alouettes’ head of scouting Russ Lande and the RSP’s Matt Waldman go position-by-position and discuss productive NFL players who fit or don't fit our desired archetypes at each position.
Who are our types of players at each position — players we might take ahead of more productive options at the position who don't fit our archetype when building a team? That's the topic of this week's scout talk with Montreal Alouettes U.S. Head of Scouting Russ Lande and Rookie Scouting Portfolio author Matt Waldman.

They go position-by-position, discussing the traits and skills that will gain or lose value for them when considering what they value at each position. This is the first of a two-part conversation on this topic that will eventually cover most of the positions. This week:

Why Kyler Murray's game, a good young passer, goes against our type of desired player relative to Lamar Jackson or even less productive players like Davis Mills, Geno Smith, and Derek Carr.
We appreciate Mike Williams and Kadarius Toney but we discuss what they have in common that doesn't fit our type for the receiver position while bringing up others who do.
Why Colts'cornerback Kenny Moore's game encompasses a lot of qualities that are missing from other players we discuss.
What put Drue Tranquill's career on a better track than Johnathan Abraham's? Why we loved Grant Delpit pre-draft but how he hasn't tightened up his game to be a productive fit in the NFL. And what all of this has to do with what we seek from safeties.
Why Myles Jacks Jack is a linebacker type that Russ covets and Denzel Perryman is a type he wouldn't build around but would make good use of his services? Why Matt covets Eric Kendricks and Pete Woerner.
Who would Matt prefer as a running back type between a player he loves to watch as a fan and a backup he appreciates more as an evaluator? The player who runs on the edge of abandon that Russ values and a productive player who doesn't fit Russ'archetype at the position. Why Ezekiel Elliott is still a top back?

In two weeks, we'll cover the offensive and defensive lines and finish up tight and running backs. Another great pod that’s appointment listening.
