Statement of Need

Abnormal liver biochemical and function tests are frequently detected in asymptomatic patients since many screening blood test panels routinely include them. A population-based survey in the United States conducted between 1999 and 2002 estimated that an abnormal alanine aminotransferase (ALT) was present in 8.9 percent of respondents. (2017 article indicated 10% of population have elevated transaminase levels). This podcast will educate providers on preferred approaches to the diagnosis and evaluation of those with abnormal liver tests.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this offering, the participant will be able to:

• Discuss liver enzyme testing; screen and diagnostic.
• Describe diagnostic algorithms for patients with abnormal liver enzyme values.
• Identify the root causes and underlying conditions of enzyme abnormalities.
• Discuss the role of O-T-C pain medications and statins on liver enzymes.
