THE SUPREMACY OF CHRIST 2
COL. 1:18
Introduction: Jesus Christ
 Image of the invisible God
 Firstborn over al creation
 By Him all things were created
 In Heaven and on earth
 Visible, invisible, thrones, powers, rulers and authorities
 You name it, He created it
 He is before all things, and remains eternal
 In Him all things hold together
 Verse 18 introduces us to three more titles

1.He is the head of the body, the church
 After dealing with the cosmic significance of the Son in his eternal being
 Brings us now to Christ and the church
 Note the church is not described as a body of Christians
 He is the head of the church, without Him the church is dead
 This link between Christ and the church exists by the in dwelling of the Holy Spirit
 On His resurrection day Jesus became the head of the church
 On that day He breathed the Holy Spirit on them and said receive the Holy Spirit
 This was for regeneration, it is a verb indicating that Jesus was giving the Spirit in order to bring forth life and a new creation
 But church is the body of Christ: critical truth
 That is why whoever persecutes the church on earth is persecuting Christ in heaven
 When Saul was still breathing murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples, Jesus showed up and spoke to him
 He did not say why are you persecuting my children, followers, my disciples
 He said Why are you persecuting me
 Whoever touches you, touches Jesus in heaven
 Therefore learn to keep your focus, leave your battles to the Lord
 Fulfill your purpose, accomplish your mandate
 Don’t focus on things that will cause you to disengage
 Don’t focus on things that delay you
 Don’t be scared, don’t give up, don’t give in, keep the pace
 The Lord is coming soon, time is running out, run, run faster
 The church operates by His power
 The church functions as his representatives: represent Him well
 As the head of the body, the body is totally dependent on Him
 As the Head He is the command center for every member in the body, and for the body as a unit
 He is the command center for every activity in the body

2.He is the beginning
 Rev. 22:13 Read
 He is the Alpha and the Omega
 The beginning and the end
 There is no beginning without Him
 Every beginning stems from Him
 There is no end without Him
 He remains Jesus even at the end of everything

3.He is the firstborn from among the dead
 This is about His rank
 He died and He rose again
 But Lazarus rose from the dead
 So did Dorcas and Eutychus
 They were resuscitated but He was resurrected
 The difference between resuscitation and resurrection
 With resuscitation the person keeps the same body and therefore will die at some point
 With resurrection, there is a new and different body
 According to 1 Cor. 15
 The perishable body is raised imperishable
 The body sown in dishonor is raised in glory
 A body sown a natural body is raised a spiritual body
 When Jesu comes, some will be transformed and some will be resurrected, but for the church, we shall all be like Him
 Why: Rev 1:17-18. He is alive for ever and ever

What does it mean for the church, His body
 God placed all things under His feet and appointed Him head over everything for the church
 Which is the body, the fullness of Him who fills everything in every way
 The fullness of Christ resides in His body
 The church, by virtue of it being the body of Christ, may partake of all that Jesus Christ is and possesses
 This for the purpose of continuing His mission and ministry in the world
 The Holy Spirit helps us to reproduce the life, ministry and mission of Jesus Christ
 We function as the representatives of Jesus Christ
 And now God has kept you and I alive on earth and alive in Christ
 Re commit yourself to this cause
 Re dedicate yourself to his plan, his mission and his mandate
 Lord lif
