Just because the Farm Bill deadline got extended to fall of 2024, doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a lot of time for more discussion, says Mary Kay Thatcher, senior manager of federal government and industry relations with Syngenta. She says the upcoming election year might make Farm Bill negotiations messy. Before we look ahead to 2024, Thatcher says there’s regulation in the works now that will definitely have an impact on farmers’ wallets. The Environmental Protection Agency is proposing a new herbicide framework that would essentially require farmers to gain points through conservation practices in order to get herbicide. Thatcher says this could have larger financial impact than even the Farm Bill, and encourages farmers and agribusinesses to keep their eye on where this proposal is moving.
