Even though it's still winter, it is never too early to start planning for crop insurance.  Farm director Pam Jahnke had the chance to visit with Deanna Ranum, crop insurance agent with Premier Insurance Solutions.  Many conversations are happening trying to make decisions with still so many unknowns for the upcoming growing season.  One thing we can say pretty confidently is it looks like rates for crop insurance are on the rise.

Each year Cedar Crest Ice Cream partners with the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation to hold their Ice Cream Flavor Creation contest.  4-H members and clubs from around the state get the chance to be creative and come up with their very own new flavor.  Luke Kohlwey, Director of Sales for Cedar Crest shares more about the contest and what it takes to make those winning flavors become reality.   He has continued to be impressed with 4-H members' creativity and strong involvement in the contest. It's time for our ALCIVIA Coop Talk.  Farm director Pam Jahnke catches up with Tom Volkert, Energy Products Specialist.  Energy and fuel prices continue to rise.  This continues to be not only a domestic issue, but a global issue as well.  Volkert and his team at ALCIVIA work hard to serve customers and help them get the most value possible.

Matt Tranel, broker with EverAg joins the morning show to talk about all things in dairy and crop markets.  Reports show that even though we have seen some strength in our dairy commodity prices, the US butter and cheese prices continue to be quite a bit lower than others in the global marketplace.  That makes things very attractive for others and hopefully should encourage exports.  The recent USDA cattle report has given some insight for the dairy industry on the number of replacement heifers retained.  That number is down from lastyear and hasn't been this low since 2005.  Use of sexed semen and breed-to-beef programs seem to have affected this number and look to limit how quickly dairy farmers may be able to expand their milking herds in the short term.  Finally, we are seeing lots of activity in our crop markets.  Weather and lower projections from Brazil continue to drive bean prices, and even though China is in the Lunar New Year, there is rumor of them being in need of more soybeans as well.  Conflict between Russia and Ukraine also may have a longer term effect on corn and wheat markets, time will only tell based on what happens going forward.
