This is our first look at next year’s Oscars. We cover all the buzz and create snapshot profiles for each of the contending films and performances to follow during the march to the 2018-19 Academy Awards . Although we’ll have some diverse programming for you in the coming months from Avengers to basketball, we do want to give you an early look and some WAY too early predictions.

What feels like an Oscar film, and what doesn’t? There are a lot of previous winners and perennial favorites coming out with films this year. We profile the most buzzed about contenders, including some cast & crew information & a plot premise. Steve McQueen, Damien Chazelle, Barry Jenkins, and Robert Zemeckis are helmers with previous wins that have new movies this year. Viola Davis, Emma Stone, and Julianne Moore bring their Oscar winning talents back to the screen. Then we also have an increasing number of female crewed films led by Mimi Leder, Julie Taymor, Gillian Flynn, and Diablo Cody. The industry has a long way to go, but progress is encouraging.

After our profiles, we quickly preview a bunch of other films with chances at Oscar. Then we cover & predict the four acting and director categories, flush with all the internet’s proclaimed nominees. Full disclosure, we drew from Brandon Katz at The Observer, Brian Truitt at USA Today, and Brent Lang at Variety while making up these lists. We do recommend you read their work.
