Surprise!!! Netflix ran a Super Bowl trailer for the new Cloverfield movie and then dropped it like a Beyonce record onto their streaming service that very night after the game. It’s a landmark moment in movie marketing, and we talk about the seismic shift in salesmanship throughout the episode.

We open with a lightning round of Super Bowl trailer reactions. Jurassic World has dinosaurs almost biting us, Skyscraper drops the pretense at the movie pitch, Mission Impossible 6 reminds us just how caucasian we are, the Avengers beg many questions about lizard people and shades of purple villainy, A Quiet Place tells kids not to play with ANYTHING, Red Sparrow elicits primitive grunts from one of us, and Solo is great for wigs, but might be bad for Star Wars (?). Phew, that sentence was a whopper, but the point is we had fun talking about the upcoming slate of Super Bowl marketed films.

Our featured review covers The Cloverfield Paradox. Gu-gu Mbatha-Raw, Daniel Bruhl, Daniel Oyelowo, Chris O’Dowd, and random sci-fi monstrosities try to elevate the material, and we wonder whether or not we care. For the questions of the episode - is this movie awesomely bad? Is this an artful disaster? Do we love to hate this film? - stirs up enough banter, outrage, and awe for multiple episodes. You’re just lucky enough to get it all smushed into one.

In a unique twist of our podcast, Also Mike actually suggests you listen to the spoiler section regardless of whether you’ve seen the film. We both give this movie a Watch, but you also don’t wanna miss out on our full plot breakdown of this flick. It’s a laundry list of the mind boggling, it’s a celebration of the absurd, it might be one of the better bad movies in awhile, and us talking about it has been one of the funner moments of our show. We might actually make this movie better, if that’s even possible.

This episode drops at a transitional moment for our podcast as we’ve just finished reviewing all of the Oscar Nominated films from the acting categories, Best Original Screenplay, Director, and Picture. Next we’ll have an episode on each of those categories, and this big little movie event is a fun way to cleanse your movie palette before we dive back into the Oscars.

As always, do chat with us on social media. We’re on facebook, twitter, instagram, gmail, and reddit. Do please follow, subscribe, like, and review us. But if you don’t have time for all that, maybe just tell a friend about us. In any event, we thank you for helping us grow and spread the world about Mike, Mike, and Oscar. When reality has sucked, you’ve been watching movies with us, and we really appreciate you all.
