With the release of Bohemian Rhapsody, we now have not 1, but 2 music movie blockbusters at the fall box office. Rami Malek, Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper, and Sam Elliott are all said to be contenders for major acting nominations and perhaps Oscar wins. So we wanted to celebrate the history of this genre by ranking all our favorite performances, and it’s a top 5 extravaganza.

Much like the John Cusack character in High Fidelity, we’re both Rob Gordon’s at heart and love to make top 5 lists. This episode features both our favorite films and our rankings of what we think are the best performances by and of musicians on the silver screen. We therefore categorize the genre into two main parts, fiction and non-fiction. For the latter, we begin by ranking our favorite true to life performances in biopics about musicians. Then we breakdown their fictional counterparts, and we end with both a best actress and actor for the best performances ever by musicians turned thespians. Of course, we cannot resist identifying our favorite films in the genre as well.

But as always, the best part is how detailed and weird our discussion gets. In a surprise twist, our minimal amount of production notes somehow becomes a grand conversation about the genre and all its highlights. So we hope you enjoy the rowdy discussion. We sure did.

This is the third episode on the same topic of music movies, fourth if you count our OSP of A Star Is Born. So go back and listen to our review of Bohemian Rhapsody and Queen’s Filmography in the previous two episodes. We’ve also covered another 25+ 2018 films including recent episodes like the Halloween movie event, First Man, Leave No Trace, and documentaries like Three Identical Strangers. MMO could certainly become one of your go-to film review podcasts if you love to stay up to date on the Oscar Race, but don’t forget about our series like the Halloween franchise, Conjuring Universe, MCU, and the Mission Impossible films. We even released 11 halfisodes on the Best Original Song categories of Oscars’ past if you enjoy how we talk about music in film. In any event, there’s something for everyone in our massive back catalog of episodes.

Feel free to chat with us on social media. We’re Mike, Mike, and Oscar on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail. We’re at MMandOscar on Twitter, and our website is nearing it’s launch date. Once again, thank you for giving us our best month of listen numbers ever this past October. When reality has sucked, you’ve been watching movies with us. We’re Mike, Mike, and Oscar!
