The Governor applauds local business for their efforts in fighting the pandemic

And, with its tourism economy halted, the Delta goes digital.

Then, local farmers are dumping product due to low demand.

Plus, how has the pandemic affected Mississippi voters’ attitudes about the November election.

Segment 1:

Governor Tate Reeves says Mississippi businesses are stepping up to join the fight during the coronavirus pandemic. Joined by a parade of statewide business leaders during his daily press briefing yesterday, Reeves celebrated the collaboration between the public and private sectors in finding solutions to the state's needs. The Governor is also looking forward as his extended shelter-in-place order is set to expire Monday. Reeves has largely stayed on message this week regarding the need to get Mississippians back to work while considering public health concerns. He says the state needs to take a gradual approach.

With concerts canceled and musicians gig-less, music rich tourist destinations like Clarksdale are adapting. Bubba O'Keefe is the Director of Visit Clarksdale. He tells MPB's Alexandra Watts, once the tourists stopped coming, the city had to find other ways to get their hottest commodity in front of people.

Segment 2:

The demand for nearly every agricultural product has fallen flat during the Coronavirus pandemic, causing farmers across the gulf states to lose essential income. As MPB’s Kobee Vance reports, some products are being thrown out because of decreased demand.

Segment 3:

The latest Millsaps-Chism Strategies poll reveals Mississippians are feeling the impact of the pandemic. 73% believe the coronavirus outbreak will lead to an economic recession. Nearly 70% say they are considerably or slightly more concerned with affording medical coverage. Nathan Shrader is the Chair of the Department of Government and Politics at Millsaps College. In part two of our conversation, he explains how those concerns are shaping attitudes toward the the November general election.
