CHECHERS AND WRECKERS FOR FRIDAY, MAY 7TH

WHATS HAPPENING

It is the two best words in the racing season.  OPENING NIGHT!  The Red River Valley Speedway opens tonight at 7pm with 6 classes of racecars.  IMCA Hobby Stocks, SportMods, Stock Cars, Modifieds, and the 305 Sprint Cars.  And the INEX Legends.

Also running tonight, River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks with their season opener (7pm), and the second week of racing at the I-94 Speedway in Fergus Falls (7pm).

Tomorrow night- the 58th Season Opener at the Viking Speedway in Alexandria (6:30).  North Central Speedway in Brainerd continues their season (6:45).  As well as Test and Tune at Buffalo River Speedway (1-4), Jamestown Speedway (4-8) and Sunday testing at Sheyenne Speedway in Lisbon (5).

WHAT HAPPENED

FRIDAY, APRIL 30TH AND SATURDAY, MAY 1ST-I94 SPEEDWAY FERGUS FALLS, MN

“The Ripper” Ryan Satter and Kyle Dykhoff opened the season with their Street Stock wins. “The Brockstar” Brock Gronwald and Matt Baker picked up Midwest Modified victories.  Shane Sabraski swept the weekend in the Super Stocks.  ‘Ol Braski picked up career wins number 710 and 711.  Ryan Mikkelson and Ben Wolden won in the Limited Late Models.  Chris Mensen and Ryan Gierke won in the Modifieds.  Mensen’s first win in seven years of trying.  Jeffrey Massingill and “Diamond” Dave Mass were tops in the Late Models.  And Matthew Dittman as well as Matt Pederson rounded out the weekend with their Short Tracker wins.

NASCAR

Kyle Busch took advantage of some late race cautions to win in Kansas Sunday, making him the 10th different NASCAR Cup Series winner in 11 races.  It just so happened to be on Busch’s 36th birthday, and after Busch beer had a fan vote to name the race, it also just happened to be named Buschy McBusch Race 400.  I’m not a tinfoil hat wearing conspiracy theorist, but I can’t ignore the circumstances here.  Denny Hamlin finished 11th and despite being winless on the year still maintains an 87 point lead over the only 2 time series winner this season Martin Truex JR.

Up next for the Cup Series-Throwback weekend this Sunday for the Goodyear 400 at the Darlington Raceway.

SCHATZ WATCH

Donny Schatz ended up 12th on Friday, April 30th, and 5th on Saturday, May 1st for the Missouri Outlaw Showdown at the I-70 Motorsports Park in Odessa, Mo.  Schatz remains winless on the year but is currently sitting 6th in Outlaw points, 198 behind the two-time and defending series champion the “Big Cat” Brad Sweet.

Schatz heads to the #letsracetwo event at the Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, OH currently sitting at 299 Outlaw wins.  According to superfan, 13-year-old Mikey Spieker, Schatz has swept this event 3 times in the last 5 seasons.  (2015, 2018, and 2019) And if any weekend can get Schatz back on the winning track, this is it.
