Fly Fishing for Trout

Recent rains have increased the levels and flushed many nymphs from the riffles, providing some excellent fly fishing. The trout are feeding heavily on the Stonefly Nymphs, Mayfly Nymphs, and Caddis Larva. These are the 3 flies I use to match these nymphs:

* Murray’s Dark Stonefly Nymph size 12* Mr. Rapidan Bead Head Nymph size 12* Murray’s Caddis Larva size 14

A very effective tactics in these stream conditions is to enter the side of the stream right below the riffle and cast 20 feet across stream. After the nymph sinks deeply, strip it back across stream four inches every six seconds. Successive casts are 3 to 4 feet longer until you are casting close to the far bank. This method effectively covers all of the water before you, just like cutting a larger piece of the pie on each cast.

By wading slowly downstream and repeating the above tactics you can catch many trout.
