This holiday presentation explores the biblical episodes surrounding the birth of Christ as depicted in masterworks from the Gallery’s permanent collection. Gariff examines excerpts from the King James Version of the Bible and investigates the iconography, artistic technique, and historical context of works from the Gallery’s collection, such as paintings by Duccio, Fra Angelico, Botticelli, Giorgione, and Gerard David. This lecture was presented on December 13, 2018, at the National Gallery of Art.
