“We are all in this together.” In this episode of New Ideal Live, Ben Bayer and Keith Lockitch look at the different ways in which this catchphrase is being used in the context of the pandemic.

Focusing on two recently published articles: “We’re Not ‘All in It Together’” by Eric Liu and “Are We All in This Together?” by Michael Sandel, Bayer and Lockitch argue that although the catchphrase is sometimes used innocuously, it is also used to create false alternatives that oversimplify the debate about the best path forward in this crisis. They also isolate the underlying philosophical premise that Liu and Sandel are communicating in their articles — and note how that premise goes unchallenged more broadly in our culture today.
