In chapter 2 we get to experience Jonah’s physical, emotional, and spiritual low. This is certainly something we can all relate to – living in the brokenness from our choices and the choices of those around us. But at his lowest moment – even as he had been running from God – we see Jonah acknowledge the ultimate grace of his savior as he proclaims, “Salvation comes from the Lord.”

“The engulfing waters threatened me, the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you, Lord my God, brought my life up from the pit. When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, Lord, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple.”

Jonah 2:5-7

“He points out that the text has been depicting Jonah as descending—going down to Joppa, down into a ship, down into the depths of the ship—and now, finally, he goes even further down into the very depths of the ocean. But not until he was all the way down, finally stripped of his own self-sufficiency, was deliverance possible.”
