Lithium is one of the key raw materials in the energy transition, and it is a byproduct of oil and gas production – a component of the salty brines that accompany hydrocarbon production. The oil and gas industry is increasingly exploring how to extract lithium from produced water. As oil and gas producers contemplate becoming lithium producers as well, raw materials traceability via digitized supply chains is receiving more attention from the extractive industries as well as manufacturers and governments. In this installment of NGI's Hub & Flow podcast, Jess Green of UK-based Circulor talks to NGI Associate Editor Matthew Veazey about the growing importance of traceability along the supply chain for lithium from the standpoint of environmental, social, and governance – or ESG – compliance.
