Before that he was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives during the busing crisis of the 70s, served on the Boston City Council, and was president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors for a year. As an athlete, he played college basketball, was named Most Valuable Player, and was selected in the fourth round of the NBA draft.
