When God doesn’t live up to our expectations, we humans have been known to hold him in contempt. Yet God with patience and wisdom continues to work out his plan. Some 400 years after the time of Malachi, God sent John the Baptizer as a messenger and then Jesus as God incarnate. One day Jesus will return, and yes, he will bring with him the new heaven and new earth, but he will also come as judge. Instead of contempt, then, our response should be to fear—not the soul crushing kind that knows nothing of love, but the awe and trepidation kind that respects God’s holiness.
