Holiness is the highlighted fundamental quality of God throughout the Old Testament, an understanding which is then assumed and continued into the New Testament. It stands for both God’s positional separation—his otherness—and his absolute moral purity. God’s holiness presents a problem for humanity—which is incapable of approaching God due to our individual and shared depravity. But God, through Christ and his Holy Spirit, not only addresses the problem of our depravity but then makes us holy and calls us to live holy lives.
