It is not uncommon for people who follow Jesus to feel like it is solely up to them to become more like him in their attitudes and behaviors. With this perception of the Christian life, people often feel like their fundamental identity is that of sinner rather than saint. The Bible, however, paints a different picture. Instead of God’s children doing their own heavy lifting, it is God who transforms, who works in us the process of each one of us becoming like Christ. Our role is simply to abide in Christ, to cling to him, to listen to and learn from his teachings. As we abide, the Spirit of God builds on the work that God has already accomplished, is now accomplishing, and will one day bring to completion when Christ returns.
