The Prophecy of Agabus

Intro

A. PROPHETS IN THE O.T.

1. They were God’s mouthpiece.

2. The test for a true prophet of God. Deut. 18:21-22

B. PROPHETS IN THE N.T.

1. Grudem view - TWO KINDS of prophets.

a. The OT gift of prophecy is found ONLY among the apostles. Eph. 2:20

b. The NT prophets do not speak with the same authority as the OT prophets

2. Acts 21:11 - support or obstacle?

a. The accusation of errors.

b. The defense of an inerrant prophecy.

(1) Track record. Acts 11:27-28

(2) Agabus explicitly claims that he spoke the words of the Holy Spirit.

(3) Luke records Agabus’ sign acts similar to OT prophets.

(4) Two ways to harmonize the prophecy with the actual events. First, Compare with Acts 28:17.

Second, the Jews in Jerusalem are the ultimate cause.
