Peter Bruce-Clark (@PBColossus) is a millennial here to clear up long-standing misconceptions. Impact Investing is a strategy, NOT an asset class. Peter is a GP at Social Impact Capital. SIC invests in companies that have an element of social impact at the core if it’s business model while delivering top decile returns from their first fund. That’s top decile among all VC funds and strategies, period. This is not philanthropy.

Prior to joining Social Impact Capital, Peter was Head of BD at RCI, an alt lending platform backed by 8VC and Soros Fund Management. Prior to that, Peter created an early-stage AI venture capital firm focused on investing in companies using machine learning in high-impact areas of application, along with a management consultancy for institutional investors, Kalytix Partners.  In addition to his work, Peter has led research on impact finance and strategic investment at Stanford University and was published in the Oxford Handbook of Sovereign Wealth Funds.

In this episode, Peter breaks down the impact investment spectrum and the corresponding return profiles for each strategy, including why ESG is for boomers. Peter covers how his background in philosophy gives him an advantage as an emerging manager, his tips for maximizing your fund's value-add with limited resources, and how to bootstrap your fund's thesis with an MVP fund. Peter also shares insights on what Sovereign Wealth Funds are, how they're governed, and if emerging managers should be seeking them as LP capital (hint: SWF's make up $6T of the $100T global institutional investor community). Most importantly, Peter shares that his father looks like Karl Marx, and how that got him one of the best jobs of his life.

Peter takes our hand and walks us through what it's like to build a great fund from Day 1.
