Catharine Dockery (@vice_ventures) is bad-ass. She founded Vice Ventures, a seed-stage fund kickin' it in NYC and pioneering investments in "bad" industries. Recognized by Forbes 30 under 30 as a rising star in venture capital, Catharine was previously chief of staff and head of private investments for Andy Dunn, a prominent investor, and co-founder of men’s clothing brand Bonobos, bought by Walmart in 2017.  Prior to that, Catharine was an equities trader at Citi Group where she ran a popular blog called Dockery's Daily Docket. If that background wasn't already intimidating, she studied Neuroscience and Finance at NYU.

In this episode, we discuss how Catharine developed the unique thesis that allowed her to game the system and take advantage of arbitrage around what traditional institutional investors are "allowed" to invest in. She shares her secrets on how to fundraise from LP's with ZERO network and on the learnings from having titans of the modern economy like Marc Andressen and Bradley tusk as LP's to her fund. She also shares what it's like to sit at the intersection of philosophy and venture capital, what her frameworks are for investing in uncertain regulatory environments, and gives us her outlook for investing in psychedelics. For those waiting for recreational magic mushrooms to hit the corner bodega, calm down tf for a second. Catharine's investments include Recess, a beverage brand that infuses CBD and adaptogen into sparkling water; Bev, which sells California Rosé in a can, and also claims Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund as a seed investor; and Indose, a precision-focused cannabis vaporizer.

Catharine clues us in on how to build a great fund from day 1.
