The jury in the Amber Guyger murder trial has sentenced the former Dallas cop to 10 years in prison.

The sentence was issued just hours after the jury found Guyger guilty in the murder of her upstairs neighbor Botham Jean. She was looking at a maximum of life in prison.

Guyger fatally shot Jean in his own apartment a little more than a year ago, claiming that she mistook his apartment for hers and thought he was a burglar in her apartment. The jury believed that her use of deadly force was not justified.

Jean’s mother Allison Jean testified about the effect Jean’s murder has had on their tight-knit family at Guyger’s sentencing hearing. “My life has not been the same. It’s been like a roller coaster,” she said. “I can’t sleep
