In 1619, the first 2 ships of captured Africans landed on American soil, which launched a culture in American colonies, built on an economy of slavery. Many people still believe that culture ended with the Civil War. Nothing could be further from the truth. Benjamin McHie Marie Manthey, join me to reveal the journey of one young woman, Francis McHie in 1929, who bravely fought the status quo of blatant discrimination toward black citizens in Minnesota in 1929, by applying to the School of Nursing at the U of MN. She broke the color barrier in nursing, not only Minnesota, but every state she stepped foot into over the course of her lifetime. Her nephew, Mr McHie, will share her story with us. Ms Manthey, pioneer of Primary Nursing will share a historical look at discrimination in U of MN. We will introduce a new U of MN Nursing Scholarship in honor of Francis for individuals of color.
