Runes for Transformation (Weiser Books, August 2008) is an amalgam of ancient runic wisdom and modern transformative techniques, which include hypnotherapy, affirmations, NLP, visualizations, meditation and even a bit of sociology (so readers can understand the social perceptions involved with the collective unconscious).

Olsen begins by illustrating the use of runes throughout Northern Europe, showing their primary purpose as a method for written communication. In this function, they were used nearly all over the world. He shows that the English language today is a distant relative of the runic language spoken over 1,000 years ago. The people that spoke this language lived in the lands of Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Readers will see that many of the beliefs, customs, and ideologies that were used 1,000 years ago are still alive and well within us today.

Runes were also used as transformative tools in everything from healing to victory in battle. There are numerous references in literature to runes being used this way, however, there are few references to the divinatory use of runes.

Olsen makes the case that the time has come to bring the deeper workings of runes to the modern world. It is time to update the transformative processes, and make them accessible to a greater number of people.
