But the state has come under scrutiny for its relative lack of diversity, and calls are intensifying for it to give up its preeminent position.Edward L. Widmer is a former speechwriter for President Bill Clinton. Currently, he is a distinguished lecturer at the Macaulay Honors College of the City University of New York, and a Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs.
