This Saturday 20 June will mark six months to the day since fires broke out in the Adelaide Hills and Kangaroo Island.

Including the Yorketown and Keilira fires, a total of 278,603 hectares were burnt in South Australia last summer, with hundreds of livelihoods and family homes burnt out, and three lives tragically lost.

Across the fire grounds, early relief and recovery activities were delivered by all levels of government, non-profit organisations, local businesses and organisations, and community members.

Community and stakeholder engagement is vital for recovery programs to succeed, and build local capacity and resilience to ensure communities are better prepared for future shocks.

On this episode of ‘Our State’, Local Recovery Coordinators Alex Zimmermann (Cudlee Creek) and Rob Manton (Kangaroo Island) talk about recovery efforts and how they’ve listened to the community’s needs and coordinated support for them.
