Tyree Barnette is a storyteller. In the sense that he’s a former journalist, in the sense that his writing has been published by the SBS and in multiple Sweatshop Literacy Movement anthologies, and in the sense that he imparts stories from his home in his southern-style cuisine. Hailing from Raleigh North Carolina, Tyree spoke to Mia about his family, soul food, and what it means to be held to a different standard as a black person growing up in the United States. Tyree’s story ‘Invasion’ is the lead story in Sweatshop’s latest anthology: ‘Racism: stories of fear, hate, and bigotry.'
