I'm finally getting back to some normalcy around here, but still, have a long way to go.  I was itching to get back to mixing, so I stopped everything else to get this first mix up for the year.  I plan on diving in this Saturday and Sunday to get everything finished up, even if it means pulling an all-nighter.  Frankly, I can't stand to be disorganized, so this will be my primary objective after tomorrow.  Fortunately, I won some tickets to "Shut Up, Sweet Charlotte" at the "14th Street Playhouse" for Rick and I, so Friday I plan on just chilling and enjoying myself.  I think we'll head over to "Joe's on Juniper" afterward for burgers and some beer.  Should be a nice evening.

As for the mix, the System Edition is pretty much what I'm feeling this time of year.  Sometimes deep and reflective while other times energized and rambunctious.  Not having too much time to scout around the different sites, I pulled everything on this mix from Beatport.  You'll notice a variety of styles from Deep, Tech, Minimal, Electro, Techno and Progressive House all thrown into a blender and poured out into a smooth confection.  Speaking of Beatport, if you haven't been over there in a while, you should really check them out.  They have completely revamped the site for a richer experience, with smoother navigation and I can now link back to each song individually.  I gotta give these guys credit; they have done an outstanding job in putting this together.  Frankly, I think they've set the bar for other online music services to emulate.  Well done.

If you're looking for one of my mainstream prog mixes, this isn't it.  I'm guessing after WMC Miami in late March, there will be plenty of it around and I'll most likely get back to that in May or so.  I don't plan another System mix until March where I'll dig even deeper into the mix.  I was checking out Stompy, and they really have their own thing going on as far as underground house music.  Intrigued with what I was hearing, I expect to be pulling a lot from there as well as some of the kick-ass leftovers that didn't make the cut for this mix.  This is a concept I'm not ready to give up on and it should be very interesting to hear the end result.

Between these two mixes, you'll notice a lot of familiar samples being used.  Frankly, I'm all for it.  For me, I like to play "name that beat" when listening to fresh new tunes that utilize a beat or lyric from a classic tune.  There's two back to back on this first mix that uses the same sample, albeit, in different ways, that is still driving me crazy.  For the life of me, I can't figure out where it was taken from, even though it is all too familiar.  Listen to track 11 and 12 and see if you can figure it out.

As the weekend nears, the weather appears to be more cooperative.  Though it's still bone-chilling at night, the daytime is cool and sunny with clear blue skies.  Just enough to keep a smile on my face.  I'll be back tomorrow with the second installment, until then...ENJOY!
