SCRIPTURE TEXT: The Book of Job

Perhaps no one in all of the Bible is more famed for their patience than Job, the “man of Uz who was blameless & upright” (Job 1:1). Indeed, even in modern society, “the patience of Job” remains a proverbial expression of supremely long-suffering graciousness. So Job proves a fitting figure to initiate our months-long study of People of Patience in the Scriptures. Yet in this sermon overview of all that transpires in the ancient Book of Job, Pastor Court reminds us to consider that the greatest gifts from this text generally lie in finding the relatable humanity of Job’s hardship. All of us face times when troubles seem to swirl around us like a whirlwind of woes, as they did for Job. And yet, strangely, it is often “out of the storm” that we may hear the Lord speak to us most powerfully (Job 38:1).
