Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell therapy has recently emerged as an effective strategy for the management of multiple hematologic malignancies and offers hope for patients in leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma settings. Oncology nurse professionals have a central role within the hematology-oncology team in guiding patients through their treatment continuum with this innovative drug class. In this activity, based on a recent live symposium, an expert panel takes a deep dive into the science behind adoptive immunotherapy with CAR-T cells. They provide guidance on best nursing practices to effectively apply lymphodepletion regimens, safely administer CAR-T cell therapy, appropriately monitor for and manage unique CAR-T cell–related toxicities, educate and counsel patients on expectations from therapy throughout the treatment protocol, as well as collaborate and communicate with the team members to optimize benefit from this novel treatment approach in a diverse range of hematologic malignancies. Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to: Discuss the latest science, including rationale, recent evidence, and ongoing clinical research, on adoptive immunotherapy with chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cells in a range of hematologic malignancies, Implement practical interventions for monitoring and managing the unique safety issues associated with the use of different CAR-T cell approaches, Employ effective strategies to educate, support, and counsel patients with leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma receiving CAR-T cell therapy, including in the context of a clinical trial, to optimize benefit and overall care.
