Recycling label liner material to reduce landfill, with Jessica Walters of Labelmakers and Felicia Richardson of Enviroflex - a podcast by PKN Editor

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News, Jessica Walters, Head of Sales & Marketing at Labelmakers, and Felicia Richardson, CEO of Enviroflex, discuss their recent collaboration to recycle label liners rather than sending them to landfill.

Labelmakers Group, Australia's biggest label printing company, has secured the rights to the worldwide patented RecuLiner technology for Australia and New Zealand and is collaborating with building materials producer Enviroflex to create a local, circular solution for recycling glassine liner from pressure senitive labels that would otherwise go to landfill.

The discussion starts with Jessica describing the RecuLiner technology and how it helps to reduce waste going to landfill, which in Australia accounts for some 10,000 tonnes per annum. Felicia then explains how Enviroflex will be working with Labelmakers to use RecuLiner's technology to convert the glassine liner into insulation products.

Jessica explains that they expect to start manufacturing insulation using the recycled product well in advance of the 2025 National Packaging Target deadlines, noting that Labelmakers' customers have been very enthusiastic about signing up to the new program with the group's new Liner Recycling Services department. This leads into a discussion regarding the importance of innovation and collaboration in establishing a circular economy for the various materials within Australia's packaging framework.

The discussion then moves on to women navigating their way to leadership in a male dominated industry. Both Felicia and Jessica talk about diversity across their organisations and in senior management along with achieving work/life balance and the importance of mentorship. Felicia also notes the benefits that have resulted from the flexible working arrangements established due to COVID.
