Ben Potock says that music was always part of the fabric of his family and that he always wanted to be a musician. He saw a friend play a drum solo when very young and he told himself, "I want to do that!" He says music can help you know yourself and connect better with other people. He has read The Music Lesson by Victor Wooten and says it changed the way he thought about music and his relationship to music; he became more intentional with his voice and how he communicates. He teaches music now and plays with his wife Lara in the band South Rail. Ben says that we really need kids to play music; learning an instrument transcends music and teaches long-term lessons and builds good habits. He and Lara are working on an app called Practipus that will help children learn to practice better, so they can more easily put in the time and realize the long-term benefits of playing music.
