It will be 20 years in September since then-Australian prime minister John Howard pledged open ended support for US military action in Afghanistan after the September 11 terror attacks.

In that time, 41 Australian soldiers have died in the longest war Australia has ever fought.

There are currently 80 Australian military personnel still there, but after US President Joe Biden announced he would withdraw American forces, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has followed suit.

On this episode of Please Explain, Tory Maguire speaks national security and foreign affairs reporter Anthony Galloway about the end of Australia’s involvement in the Afghanistan war.
