Nine years after the offer was first made, Australia has announced it will take up New Zealand’s offer to take 450 refugees over three years.

Priority will be given to about 100 people still on Nauru.Independent senator Jacqui Lambie says she secured the deal from Prime Minister Scott Morrison in return for her vote to end the medevac legislation for asylum seekers and refugees.

NZ’s offer had been repeatedly rebuffed by the Australian government since it was first made in 2013.But the deal still leaves hundreds of refugees and asylum seekers with no clear path to resettlement.

Today on Please Explain, federal bureau chief Angus Livingston joins Bianca Hall to explain what's in the deal - and what's been left out.Subscribe to The Age&SMH: https://subscribe.smh.com.au/
