A Tamil family who fled civil war in Sri Lanka by boat in 2012 and 2013 and have been in immigration detention on Christmas Island since 2019 have been released into community detention in Perth.

The Murugappan family, whose two daughters were born in Australia, were removed from the Queensland town of Biloela following unsuccessful asylum claims and had remained on Christmas Island until their youngest daughter, Tharnicaa, became ill.

The family will now undertake detention in the community while Immigration Minister Alex Hawke considers what to do next in regards to permanent settlement.

Today on Please Explain, federal political reporter Katina Curtis joins Nathanael Cooper to share the latest in this protracted battle between the asylum seeker family and the government.
