The federal budget Treasurer Josh Frydenberg handed down last week contained within it an assumption that has seriously thrown business leaders and state governments - that even with the vaccine rollout this year, Australia’s international borders would remain shut until well in to 2022.

NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet is demanding some kind of certainty over borders reopening, linked to milestones in the vaccine rollout.

Even the former deputy chief medical officer, Dr Nick Coatsworth is calling for a change in thinking about living with COVID long term.

Today on Please Explain, Tory Maguire is joined by state political editor Alexandra Smith to discuss how businesses and state governments are handling extended border closures.
