Supergirl Season 2, Episode 16, “Star Crossed”, aired March 20, 2017

We’re kind of over Supergirl at this point.

This week is ALL about relationships, and it’s both great and terrible. The twin story arcs are the arrival of Mon-El’s parents and the fallout of that on the Karamel ship; and Wynn and Lyra’s relationship.

With these relationships and the dual storylines, we have the best and worst of Supergirl all wrapped up in a single episode. The worst is Karamel.

This relationship is borderline abusive wrapped up in the stupid on again off again trope. Kara’s immediate reaction to anything Mon El does wrong is to reject him, and it keeps happening over and over again.

And we’re not saying she shouldn’t be upset about Mon-El lying, or that the relationship should be written as if everything is always perfect. She should be mad about him lying to her, and their relationship should have difficulties, like every other relationship does. That’s to be expected, but if Supergirl is an empathetic person who cares about other people, then she shouldn’t be treating Mon-El this way.

On the flip side of that, we have the wonderful treatment of Wynn and Lyra. And by that I mean that Lyra and Wynn go through a very difficult situation in this episode, and they come out the other side stronger for it! If anything I would have expected what happened with Supergirl and Mon-El to be switched for what happened with Lyra and Wynn.

Oh, and some rando shows up at the end of the episode as the lead in to the musical crossover episode of flash. This was a bit amusing if entirely too convenient and we’re looking forward to this episode of The Flash. Hopefully it’s close to the being as good as the musical episode of Buffy.
