Prof. Dr. Ara Sayegh - F. Chopin Karol Mikuli Part 6

A concert celebrating the bicentenary of the birth of Karol Mikuli.

The wide range of interests and professional activities of Karol Mikuli (1821-1897) distinguish this prominent figure among the nineteenth-century creators of Polish musical culture. Coming from an Armenian family, the hero of the concert gained fame and recognition not only as a pianist and composer but also as an excellent teacher and a tireless organizer of musical life in Lviv.

In his vocal work – unlike, for example, in the work of Stanis?aw Moniuszko, who was active in the same period – one will not find characteristic “Polish” elements, allusions to folk music or the use of texts by national poets. Mikuli models his compositions on the German singing tradition, inspired by the masters of romantic poetry – the works of Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann, Felix Mendelssohn, and Johannes Brahms, imitating the delightful sounds of nature on the one hand, and on the other hand sorrowfully reflecting on personal experiences. These themes are perfectly reflected in the concert program – songs from Op. 16 and 17 and the cycle op. 27 with a much more individual character. The whole will end with the thought-provoking cantata Die Reue (‘Sorrow’) from 1880 in its original version for baritone and string orchestra, which until recently was considered lost.

Although during Karol Mikuli’s lifetime his works were printed by the most eminent publishers in Paris, Leipzig, and Kyiv, today they are not widely known. The 200th anniversary of the composer’s birth is an excellent occasion to recall his interesting and unjustly forgotten works for solo voice with instrumental accompaniment, which will be performed by the artists of the Polish Royal Opera.
