FW De Klerk has died, and as a black South African I feel... conflicted. His legacy is a controversial one. He is often sanctified and idolised but hardly held accountable for the war crimes he committed. Is it fair to expect people of colour in South Africa to "sing kumbaya now" and forget about the past, when we as a nation have failed to address it appropriately to avoid hurting people's feelings? I understand why people may struggle to understand this perspective because for so long we as a nation have been focused on "comprising" instead of educating, uprooting and addressing the impact of oppression. My feelings this episode are intense, so buckle up and hear me out fully.

"sing kumbaya now" is a reference to the play, Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Metaphors by Mike Van Graan.
